Some thoughts about Super Mario World

Since this is the first post about video game stuff here, to give some context — I’ve been playing a bunch of older games recently with Retro Achievements on an Anbernic RG DS Plus (great little handheld, maybe I’ll make a post about it another time). Pretty neat little system that gives a fun extra gamification to completing things and completing side objectives. I’ve really been enjoying it so far and the most recent game I’ve been going through is the original Super Mario World for the SNES. It’s been ages since I’ve played it, so it’s been nice to get a full refresher.

I have a rather significant background with this particular game. Over 10 years ago I was making very below average Super Mario World rom hacks, and was following that scene quite closely. So you could say that I have a very high level of experience with this particular game. That said, I haven’t really touched the game in the better part of a decade, so a lot of the intricacies of the movement and other game mechanics I’ve slowly forgotten over the years.

I began replaying the standard game a few days ago, and have really enjoyed taking my time to go through each level (I’m making a point of collecting all of the dragon coins in each level) and finding the secret exits for levels that have them. It’s amazing how perfect the movement still feels so many years after this game came out, Nintendo really had it all figured out. That said, the game is certainly isn’t perfect. My biggest gripe is that not all stages have dragon coins, and there’s no way to track what stages you’ve collected the coins in. I suppose in the original game this doesn’t really matter, but it is a minor gripe with Retro Achievements.

That said, I’m still really enjoying a mostly casual playthrough of the game. Most of the levels play very well, even by modern standards. It really has me wanting to take a dip back into the rom hack scene to see how that has progressed over the years (if it even has, do people still even make rom hacks for this game anymore?). I should beat the game today if all goes to plan, so I’ve got to think about what I want to play next. (Likely not a platformer, but idk lol).
